All School Musical

We’re off to see the Wizard!

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s All-School Musical will be the Wizard of Oz!

Join Dorothy and her loyal companion Toto as they “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” through the Land of Oz, determined to reach the Emerald City, where the great and powerful Wizard of Oz will help them get home. Of course, along the way, Dorothy encounters witches (both good and bad), Munchkins, talking trees and winged monkeys. But most importantly, she befriends three unique characters: a Scarecrow with no brain, a Tin Man with no heart, and a Lion with no “nerve.” Their journey to happiness – and self-awareness – is a glowing testament to friendship, understanding and hope in a world filled with both beauty and ugliness.

About the Mission All-School Musical

The All-School Musical is a long standing tradition at Mission and Mission Ave. PTA is thrilled to bring another artistic educational opportunity to our school community. Every child is welcome to participate in the musical. Each age group has a unique role to play, from the special shortened rehearsals and musical numbers for our kindergarten and 1st grade students, to the lead casting for 4th-6th graders. Students get to try their hand at all levels of the production from how to plan out a scene to where lights should go to highlight the action. From solo singing to stage hand, there’s something for everyone.

Participation Fee: $45 per student. The participation fee is due at the time of registration, but may be paid any time prior to the first rehearsal. All students will receive two general admission tickets with their registration. The participation fee also helps pay for costumes, scenery, professional personnel, performance rights, and other production costs. (Scholarships are available for any family for whom this would be a hardship, as well as for all students who fall into one of the following groups: ELD, McKinney Vento and Foster Youth.)

The Mission PTA subsidizes the production to help keep the participation fee low. Some volunteer positions are of a commitment level to warrant having their student’s participation fee waived. See the Volunteer Job Descriptions for additional information. Click here to complete the registration forms.

Scholarship Funds: Scholarships are available to families for whom the participation fee/s would be a hardship, as well as for all students who fall into one of the following groups: ELD, McKinney Vento and Foster Youth. If you would like a scholarship, please fill out a Mission PTA scholarship request form (available in the office) and turn it in with your registration packet. Our hope is that no interested student is deterred from participation due to financial constraints. All requests for financial assistance will be handled by school staff and the Mission PTA Executive Board in a confidential and respectful manner.

Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals will begin after the winter holiday break, and details of the rehearsal schedule will be announced as soon as possible. Rehearsals will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays immediately after school and lasting 1-2 hours, depending on your student’s role. Your child’s call times will vary depending on the role they are cast in. There will not be any rehearsals when school is not in session. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled as needed, and you will be given advance notice of these rehearsal changes.

Production Tech Crew: Those students who are interested in being part of the back stage crew only, should register now. These roles will include non-performing tasks including making props, designing sets, costuming, makeup, lighting and sound. More information will be available soon.

Student Commitment: Being in a musical takes work – it’s fun work, but it takes effort. If a student is not dedicated to learning the songs and dances, rehearsals can become drudgery. We ask that all students read (or have explained to them) the Student Participation Agreement and sign it themselves. This will reinforce the “I’m making a commitment” aspect of this educational program. When kids are invested in something, they tend to take it more seriously and fun is the result!

Parent Participation Agreement: The Parent Participation Agreement acknowledges the policies and information provided here and must be signed and returned with the completed Student Participation Agreement and the Registration Form. You only need one Parent Participation Agreement per family, just list all the students in your family in the “Student/s Participating” section and include with your Student Registration packets and Participation Fee payment.

Parent Commitment: The musical will not happen without adult volunteers – a lot of volunteers. To ensure our success, each family is encouraged volunteer a minimum of 8 hours over the course of the production (10 weeks) and 4 hours at Tech Work day (see below.) The variety of volunteer needs is very broad and there are lots of tasks that don’t require any special skills, just a can-do attitude!

Tech Work Day: 12 – 7 pm, Sunday, April 7, 2024 – This is the date for the parent-participation tech work day for building sets, painting, sorting props, finishing costumes, etc. All families are asked to put in at least two hours at the Tech Work Day. Students are encouraged to participate, but those 4th grade and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Performance Week – April 8-14, will require 100% participation. We will rehearse this week at the El Camino High School Performing Arts Center every day this week, with our final dress rehearsal on Friday night. Our opening night show will be Saturday, April 13 (evening performance), and we will have a matinee performance on Sunday, April 14. A cast party will immediately follow the last performance on Sunday.

Cast Party: No Mission event is complete without a party! All students and their families are invited to the Cast Party immediately following the last night’s performance. The Cast Party Committee will determine the theme, desired snacks, etc., but each family is asked to provide either a food, drink or decorating item in support of the Cast Party. (Is party planning your jam? We’d love to have you on the committee!)

Contact Information: Questions about the production can be directed to play@missionpta.org.
