Garden Update

Mission Family and Friends,

Thank you so much for your continued support this past year of the school garden and Garden Committee. We have had a number of remarkable successes with getting the garden underway, our amazing Beautification Days, and launching the school mural project!

As you know, our goal is to improve the campus grounds and provide learning opportunities for our students through gardening. This last year was our first year in getting everything going and off the ground, and it was a learning year. The large garden project that was originally proposed has been revamped to incorporate feedback, recommendations, and procedural requirements. We have also expanded our vision to include a variety of beautification efforts.

Our current goals for the coming year include a complete overhaul of the existing garden beds, including regrading and repairing the drainage (winter flooding), as well as installing new garden beds and irrigation. As this stage of work is complete, we can look to expand or provide additional garden beds to those teachers who would like to incorporate gardening into their curriculum.

We also plan to continue the extremely successful School Beautification Days! These events were very well attended and amazing work was accomplished thanks to our awesome community! Our next Beautification Day is Sunday, September 29.

There is also approval for a school mural to be completed this fall at the end of the classroom wings that face the primary playground. We are very excited that the artists were able to incorporate so much of what makes Mission Magic, along with great student input! Watch for this beautiful artwork this fall.

We are so grateful for the funding the parents have provided through PTA for this work. These projects are made possible in part through PTA funds, but also through generous grants that we have received from Raley’s, Sacramento Horticulture Society, and John and Eunice Davidson Fund. Our committee continues to seek out outside funding to aid in our continued school beautification and garden goals to supplement PTA allowances.
So much of the work that we do depends upon the help and support of our Mission family! Parents, teachers, staff, and community continue to support and encourage the work being done. We welcome questions and feedback about the above projects or new ideas in order to make this work the best that it can be. Please feel free to reach out to us at garden@missionpta.org.
Thank you for your continued support! We hope to see you at our next Beautification Day!

Thank you!
