Garden Update!

Wondering what is going on with all that buzz you heard about the garden at Mission?

Hello Mission Families,

Since spring is around the corner, and it’s time to start planning, starting seeds, and digging in, our school garden committee thought it would be a good time to put out a school wide update regarding preliminary plans for an all school garden on our campus.

In case you are unaware of this idea, a handful of parents got together last year, and started talking and dreaming about a Mission Magic Garden where all grades can learn and grow in an outdoor garden setting together.  A school garden would allow for incorporating hands on learning outdoors in subjects such as math, science, history, art, English, physical education and would be in line with Mission’s experiential learning and open philosophy.

We’re working on plans and have secured grants toward this goal.  We have reached out and received approval through the school district and Mission PTA.  Currently, we are still working on securing seed money toward the project and are collaborating with the faculty to address questions and concerns that have arisen during the process. Our goal is to create a sustainable outdoor learning experience that is managed and maintained by our school community, complementing and supporting our amazing teachers, rather than creating more work for them. This takes  a lot of planning and collaboration, but we’re working on it!

In addition to the planning and preparation for the school garden, we are also in the process of planning a Spring Beautification Day on Saturday, April 6. Similar to our Fall event, the purpose of the Spring Beautification Day is to clean up the school so that the physical campus better reflects the amazing, creative, and collaborative community we have here. We will be planting, weeding, trimming, tidying, and beautifying the whole campus.  Our Fall Beautification Day was a wonderful success with over 60 volunteers working together on campus improvements.

So how can you help?  Please watch for a questionnaire coming home in the next few weeks. We need to hear from YOU! Before we build a garden, we need to know that it’s something our school community wants, supports, and will volunteer to help maintain. You can also sign up for our spring beautification day (however much time you can), join our committee, or let us know what talents, tools, or connections you may have to support this cause.

Sincerely,

The Mission Ave Garden Committee
